Toàn cầu hóa cùng sự trỗi dậy của Trung Quốc trong ba thập kỷ qua đã làm thay đổi sâu sắc cấu trúc kinh tế thế giới. Các thay đổi trong liên kết thương mại giữa Trung Quốc, Mỹ cùng các quốc gia ASEAN-6 ảnh hưởng cơ chế truyền dẫn chu kỳ kinh doanh quốc tế đến ASEAN-6. Để đánh giá tác động, tác giả sử dụng mô hình GVAR với ba thiết lập tỷ trọng thương mại nhằm nắm bắt các thay đổi trong liên kết thương mại thế giới. Các kết quả chỉ ra rằng tác động dài hạn của cú sốc GDP Trung Quốc lên GDP ASEAN-6 (ngoại trừ Thái Lan) năm 2016 mạnh hơn so với cú sốc năm 2000. Đồng thời, tác động của cú sốc GDP Mỹ năm 2008 lên GDP ASEAN-6 (ngoại trừ Indonesia) thấp hơn so với năm 2000. Các phát hiện giúp giải thích vì sao các quốc gia khu vực ASEAN hồi phục nhanh chóng sau cuộc khủng hoảng tài chính toàn cầu năm 2008
