Mục đích bài nghiên cứu nhằm tăng cường hiểu biết về nhân tố chính của quá trình phát triển từ đại học đơn ngành đến đại học đa ngành, và cách thức vận hành của quá trình phát triển 50 năm của Đại học Kinh tế Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh (UEH) và đề ra định hướng phát triển UEH cho giai đoạn tiếp theo.
Dựa trên nền tảng lý thuyết phát triển đại học và tham khảo tài liệu liên quan, cách tiếp cận nghiên cứu định tính được sử dụng và nhóm tác giả đã tiến hành phỏng vấn và phân tích chủ đề được thực hiện trên các bản ghi chép và được mã hóa thành các chủ đề, ghi nhận các quan điểm của 12 lãnh đạo và các thành viên của Hội đồng Chiến lược phát triển UEH.
Nghiên cứu khám phá các nhân tố then chốt phát triển UEH từ đại học đơn ngành thành đa ngành để giúp UEH xác định các điều kiện cấu trúc cần thiết tiến tới khả năng cạnh tranh quốc tế mạnh mẽ hơn và hội nhập sâu hơn và định hướng phát triển UEH trong giai đoạn tiếp theo. Nghiên cứu đóng góp vào lý thuyết chuyển đổi đại học hướng quốc tế hóa và cung cấp hàm ý đề xuất cho các cơ sở giáo dục đại học và cơ quan quản lý nhà nước nghiên cứu.
