Phần lớn các nghiên cứu khoa học trong lĩnh vực quản trị kinh doanh đều dựa trên phương pháp luận suy diễn - thực chứng định lượng, hoặc nghiên cứu định tính có lý thuyết nền. Hai phương pháp luận này tạo ra tri thức mới dựa trên những tri thức hiện hữu đang được chấp nhận, hay chính xác hơn là chưa bị bác bỏ, bởi cộng đồng học thuật. Như vậy, để tạo ra tri thức mới thì nhà nghiên cứu cần phải lựa chọn lý thuyết phù hợp làm nền tảng cho nghiên cứu của mình, gọi là lý thuyết nền. Đây là một công việc quan trọng nhưng khá khó khăn, đặc biệt là với những nhà nghiên cứu trẻ, ít kinh nghiệm. Mục tiêu của bài viết này nhằm chia sẻ một vài kinh nghiệm và gợi ý về vấn đề lựa chọn lý thuyết nền phù hợp. Nội dung chính bao gồm: (1) giải thích lý thuyết nền là gì và tại sao chúng ta cần lý thuyết nền; (2) làm cách nào để chọn được lý thuyết nền; (3) cách đánh giá mức độ phù hợp của lý thuyết nền cho một nghiên cứu. Hy vọng bài viết sẽ giúp các nhà nghiên cứu bớt vất vả, thêm tự tin, và tạo ra được những nghiên cứu có chất lượng tốt trong tương lai.
