Nghiên cứu được thực hiện nhằm phân tích ảnh hưởng của dòng tiền đến độ nhạy cảm của tiền mặt nắm giữ trong điều kiện doanh nghiệp gặp hạn chế tài chính. Nghiên cứu được thực hiện dựa trên phân tích dữ liệu của 533 công ty niêm yết trên Sở Giao dịch chứng khoán TP. Hồ Chí Minh và Sở Giao dịch chứng khoán Hà Nội, 230 công ty đang giao dịch thị trường giao dịch chứng khoán công ty đại chúng chưa niêm yết (UPCOM) và thị trường giao dịch ngoài quầy (OTC) trong giai đoạn 2008–2014 tạo thành bảng gồm 4.325 công ty – năm quan sát. Bằng việc sử dụng các mô hình hồi quy dữ liệu bảng với cách tiếp cận theo phương pháp hiệu ứng cố định, hiệu ứng ngẫu nhiên, GMM hệ thống, nghiên cứu chỉ ra rằng các công ty chưa niêm yết có xu hướng nắm giữ tiền mặt nhiều hơn từ dòng tiền tạo ra của công ty, trong khi các công ty đã niêm yết thì không. Bên cạnh đó, nghiên cứu này cũng phân loại các công ty theo tình trạng niêm yết, cụ thể là các công ty chưa niêm yết được xem là các công ty bị hạn chế tài chính, còn các công ty đã niêm yết là các công ty không bị hạn chế tài chính.
