Mặc dù có một lượng lớn nghiên cứu về mối quan hệ giữa chế độ đãi ngộ dành cho người lao động và năng suất doanh nghiệp, các nhà kinh tế ở Việt Nam vẫn chủ yếu tập trung vào cơ cấu tiền lương, điều này dường như vẫn chưa đạt được hiệu quả. Và hiện vẫn còn ít quan tâm đến các phúc lợi phi tiền tệ cho người lao động. Nghiên cứu này nghiên cứu tác động của chính sách phúc lợi ngoài lương đến năng suất lao động của các doanh nghiệp nhỏ và vừa (DNNVV) hiện đang đóng vai trò quan trọng trong nền kinh tế Việt Nam. Ước tính tác động cố định (FEM) và tác động ngẫu nhiên (REM) với các biến công cụ được áp dụng cho tập dữ liệu bảng được trích xuất từ các cuộc điều tra DNNVV giai đoạn 2011–2015 do Viện Nghiên cứu Quản lý Kinh tế Trung ương (CIEM) thực hiện. Nhóm tác giả nhận thấy rằng các phúc lợi ngoài lương ở các DNNVV có tác động đáng kể đến năng suất lao động. Tuy nhiên, tác động có thể tích cực hoặc tiêu cực, tùy thuộc vào các lý do khác nhau.
