Sự bùng nổ số lượng các trường đại học - cao đẳng ở Việt Nam trong hai thập kỷ gần đây đã dẫn đến sự mất cân đối trên thị trường lao động. Tuy nhiên, có rất ít nghiên cứu quan tâm đến tình trạng không phù hợp giữa đào tạo và việc làm của người lao động ở Việt nam. Thông qua cuộc khảo sát được tiến hành vào năm 2019, tác giả thảo luận các yếu tố ảnh hưởng đến việc quyết định làm việc trái trình độ và làm việc trái ngành của người lao động. Theo đó, các yếu tố như: Tuổi, thu nhập khác, tình trạng di cư, xếp loại tốt nghiệp sẽ ảnh hưởng đến khả năng làm việc trái trình độ; trong khi đó, số người phụ thuộc, thu nhập vợ chồng, số năm đi học cũng như đặc điểm của chương trình học ảnh hưởng đến quyết định làm việc trái ngành.
