Abstract

This study analyzes multidimensional deprivation and the relationship between tourism participation and multidimensional poverty among fishing households in Khanh Hoa Province, based on a survey of 143 households in areas where fisheries livelihoods and tourism intersect. Multidimensional poverty is measured using the Alkire-Foster method across seven welfare dimensions: employment, nutrition, health, education, housing, water and sanitation, and access to information; Fractional Logit and Firthlogit regressions combined with Entropy Balancing are applied to address self-selection. Deprivations are concentrated in education, health, nutrition, and housing, and tend to be higher among tourism-participating households. No statistical evidence is found that tourism participation synchronously improves non-monetary welfare; tourism in the sample appears to reflect a coping strategy among vulnerable households rather than a systematic poverty-exit pathway. Human and natural capital are consistently associated with lower deprivation levels. Policies should prioritize marine resource restoration, selectively integrate fishers into tourism value chains, and directly address specific non-monetary welfare deficits.
