This paper studies the relation between the optimal schooling duration and a number of social factors in order to provide a scientific basis for assessment of some proposals that have been being raised recently in Vietnam such as raising the retirement age, cutting the studying time, and so on. The paper concludes that in case of increased retirement age, it is imperative that the schooling duration be lengthened, whereas in case of improved efficiency in education administration and greater contribution of education to the workforce and productivity, it is necessary to reduce and increase the number of schooling years, respectively.
