Abstract

Productivity of firms is affected by both internal institutions (ownership) and external institutions (the quality of governance institutions). Using balanced panel data adapted from the Enterprise Survey and Provincial Competitiveness Index Survey during 2010–2014, this study investigates the impacts of ownership, the quality of governance institutions, and their interactions on firms’ total factor productivity (TFP). The empirical findings confirm that state ownership is associated with lower TFP, making the TFP of state-owned enterprises lower than that of non-state ones. When the quality of governance institutions improves, it helps increase the TFP of non-state enterprises to a level higher than the increase in the TFP of state-owned ones. These results provide strong evidence for restructuring state-owned enterprises and improving institutions in Vietnam.
