Các nghiên cứu về tham nhũng trước đây hầu hết bỏ qua tác động lan truyền không gian của tham nhũng. Bài viết này lập luận rằng có sự phụ thuộc không gian của tham nhũng giữa các địa phương ở Việt Nam. Sử dụng số liệu bảng cân đối ở cấp tỉnh trích từ Khảo sát năng lực cạnh tranh cấp tỉnh và Tổng cục Thống kê, nghiên cứu này đã kiểm định và kết luận mô hình phụ thuộc không gian Durbin với hiệu ứng cố định là mô hình ước lượng phù hợp. Kết quả ước lượng cho thấy có sự phụ thuộc không gian của tham nhũng giữa các tỉnh ở Việt Nam. Sự ảnh hưởng lan truyền không gian của tham nhũng được giải thích thông qua cơ chế học hỏi từ người di cư, thể chế pháp lý và tính minh bạch trong quản trị địa phương. Kết quả nghiên cứu thực nghiệm này làm cơ sở cho việc đề xuất những chính sách phòng, chống tham nhũng và sự lây lan của tham nhũng ở Việt Nam
